The two ribbon States in the valley of the Nile and the Euphrates produced civilizations as full of pomp and circumstance and more stable than any the world has ever known.

I used to look at the world and think those civilizations are dead and gone, these days I think I am probably wrong...not that I rely on a statistical approach any more than PKD's VALIS. It's probably more a belief in the Faulknarian Past from many years living in the American South.

Here, I think Churchill is guilty of Heinlein's Every generation thinks it invented sex. The Soviets are but a handful-of-pharohs blip on the timeline of Egypt.
