Once every N years, I build a new file server, nothing fancy, some ecc ram and the cheapest xeon and motherboard with 10x sata ports. Then throw in 10 drives about twice the size of the ones in the previous file server.
Then I copy everything from the old one to the new one.
Then the old one becomes cold-storage, which is turned on every few month to have zfs do scrub and copy over backups of important(tm) stuff (family photos, documents and such) before it's turned off and disconnected.
Seems to cost about $3500 each time I do it, but I only do it like, every 4 or 5 years.. My current one is actually at 7 years and I need to do it soon, but I hoped that prices would fall a bit after the corona hike, which they seem to do shortly.
